about

‘In Memory Of The Fallen’ is a track from Torture Garden’s 2013 double album release ‘The Great Depression’. It is the opening track on disc 2 of the album.

The song is characterised by its varying mood, ranging from pure, abject misery to a hopefulness and defiance. It begins with Adam and Matt Ford and their friend, credited as ‘Syntrofos Pilako’ reading suicide notes from recent suicide cases, which the band had found online. In their notes, the victims blame their governments and leaders for causing the misery which lead to their demise.

lyrics

He died for you
Returned from Iraq
Abject and broken
Addicted to smack
From Afghan fields
Disturbed by attack
He blew his brains out
And faded to black

She died for you
So don’t forget
Up to her neck
In bills and debt
Working three jobs
To pay the rent
She plunged from the fourth floor
Smashed open her head

In memory of the fallen
Who died that you might live
Invisible ink on suicide notes
Marks the best advice they could give:
‘I’m alone and without hope
Don’t end up like I did
Connect all of the dots
And make the pieces fit’

He died for you
But not in vain
Wanted stardom
But hated fame
Isolated
And full of pain
He jumped the gun
And was not seen again

In memory of the fallen
Who died that you might live
Between the lines on suicide notes
Lays the best advice they could give:
‘I’m alone and without hope
Don’t end up like I did
Join up all of the dots
And make the pieces fit’

“Let us have no more suicides from weariness,
Which come like a final sacrifice crowning all those
That have gone before. Better one last laugh, à la
Cravan, or one last song, à la Ravachol”

In memory of the fallen
Who died that you might live
Scribbled on each suicide note
Is the best advice they could give:
‘I’m alone and without hope
Don’t end up like I did
Unify all of the dots
And make the pieces fit’
